Fatal If Swallowed: Reclaiming Creativity and Hope Along the Uncharted Path
alternative mental health
Decades before yoga, meditation, journaling, and alternative medicine became mainstream in America, many individuals trusted their intuition on how to chart a path around prescribed choices in life. As told in this gusty, poetic memoir, Joan Leof, a woman who came of age in the 1960s, was among them. Her book explores the many ways we absorb toxic belief systems. The story chronicles how she learned to trust her intuition by rejecting expected social norms such as opting for traditional medical

And the truth shall set you free! ?
The day I stopped believing in religion and the tons of superstitious? mumbo jombo that goes along with it, my depression and anxiety disappeared.
Religion is a cult of fear. Of reward and punishment. Of sin and salvation. When caught up in that warp, out goes sanity.
Adore you!? God Bless You!!!
I went on antipsychotic medication and it was quite literally like a chemical labatomy. I had such low dopamine levels that I lost my emotions for two years – literally could not feel a single emotion – the only? way I could get through it was by consuming 5-6 cups of caffeine at a time. Everything she says resonates with me.
I finally learned to heal once I recognized that my illness was caused by cerebral allergies.
Good video!
@jerseygrl5 It’s not just toxins and? nutritional issues either – how many people have screwed up relationships and can’t put their finger on what’s going wrong in them? We need to learn how to relate to each other; how to express ourselves in a way that we say what we mean and to really listen and hear the other person. Rarely in the US is the problem toxic or nutritional.
psych drugs are? crap!!
@rdbn25 Google Genita Petralli and? visit her website. Her program works.
@Judeau0311? troo dat
I was depressed for decades. 4 years ago I chose to stop eating wheat gluten to address other issues and haven’t had a depressed day since! It’s not just toxins, it’s nutritional issues too. I struggled for years and? main stream medicine couldn’t/wouldn’t help me. I had to help myself.
@elcolbino ok what was her solution for change? She’s saying we should stop the pills and do what? I dont? hear any ideas.
Tell me, do you take a biopsy of the brain to? see if if the neurons are damaged by toxins? If not, then you are just as bad as the psychiatrists with their claims, because you have no proof.
I really? believe in this. In the 70′s, I went through a long and deep depression. I begged for meds for relief but the psychiatrist told me to continue with my therapy and that he believed I could do it without the drugs. I did get well, and have never suffered like that again because I learned something about my thinking and my diet (which had been horrible). I ate better and started feeling better and changed my thoughts. But people I know who took the drugs for theirs never got better.
2003-10-07 per Baycrest Hospital Malignant Noeplasms Brain; This is what shows on my Ontario Health and Long Term Care, personal claim history-I was lead to believe paxil was a once a day vitamin pill and took it every morning from July 2001 to July 2002. This women knows what she? is talking about!
You’re crazy? lady.
imagine? that… LOL. healthy eating and skills to keep one healthy make you mentally better…
When psychotic paranoia feels better than side effects of drugs that make you fat tired and dead, it is hard for some of us buy into that and I was hit at age 4 and I always fought the BS fed to me because I never got to have the life that these adults who were drugged at 20 miss.
I like the constant use of words that do not exist and the use of BS marketing terms, such as the prefix “bio.” Perhaps she could point to something tangible and obvious and people could decide for themselves, instead of spouting a lot of? buzzwords.
so antipsychotics don’t cause permanent brain and central nerve system? damage?
Genita, in your article, “Green Mental Health Care – Reclaiming Lives From Psychiatric Drugs” you mentioned something about psychiatric drugs causing aneurisms. I know a woman who conducted NAMI meetings years ago. She had a daughter who was on bi-polar drugs which cost hundreds of dollars each month. Later her daughter died of an aneurism. I was wondering if the drugs could have been what caused her? death.
A unique journey.,
I started the first chapter of this book and was transcended into and transfixed by her haunting descriptions of mental illness and the challenges that faced Joan who chose “The road less traveled” to rise above the affects of shock treatment and medications that took her whole spirit away. Joan bravely searched another way to surmount her despair. She showed her resourcefulness and her trust in herself to go through many years of discovery of who she was. She did not accept that she would live her life on psychiatric drugs. Joan found her way through many alternative choices. She now is an accomplished writer and a leader of journal workshops where she helps others in big and small ways to discover themselves through journaling. Joan writes in a poetic style and for me , each chapter is a poem. Through her poetic writing, she gives the reader a sense of beauty among the tragedies and successes of her life. I highly recommend this special book to anyone who wants to feel inspired by our own self- actualization. The title, “Fatal if Swallowed has many levels of meanings. Discover them little by little as you read about Joan’s incredible journey.

|Compelling Story,
I read this memoir and felt so relieved another person had similar experiences as I had. Joan tells her story simply but with great passion and it is great to see how she relied on her intuition to get better. I know also that journaling can be quite helpful whether or not you suffer. This book is a must read for those who think the “is no hope.”
